The Tirukkuṟaḷ of Tiruvalluvar
The “scripture common to the world” — 1,330 couplets on virtue, wealth and love. Every couplet in Tamil with transliteration and English, a key couplet of each chapter word by word with an insight, tagged by theme and searchable.

Background
What the Tirukkuṟaḷ is
The Tirukkuṟaḷ — “the sacred couplets” — is a Tamil book of 1,330 two-line poems on how to live, by the poet Tiruvalluvar. It belongs to the Eighteen Minor Classics (Patiṉeṇkīḻkkaṇakku) of the post-Saṅgam age and is usually dated between about 300 BCE and 500 CE (most scholars today favour the 5th century). It has been called Ulaka-potumaṟai, “the scripture common to the world”, because it names no sect, god or caste: Śaivas, Vaiṣṇavas, Jainas, Buddhists and Christians have all claimed it as their own.
Its plan follows three of the four aims of life (puruṣārthas): aṟam (dharma, virtue), poruḷ (artha, wealth and polity) and iṉpam / kāmam (love). The fourth, vīṭu (mokṣa), is not given a book of its own — tradition says it is the fruit of living the other three rightly.
Tiruvalluvar

Almost nothing certain is known of the poet. Legends make him a weaver of Mylapore, husband of the devoted Vāsukī, or a Jaina ascetic; the name may mean “the holy one of the Valluva community”. What the work shows is a mind of great learning in both Tamil and Sanskrit thought, a householder’s warmth and a statesman’s realism. He is honoured with temples (as at Putlur, pictured) and with the 133-foot statue at Kanyakumari — one foot for each chapter.
The plan of the book
Three books (pāl), thirteen sections (iyal), 133 chapters (adhikāram) of exactly ten couplets each. The order of chapters and the section divisions shown here are those of the classical commentator Parimēlaḻakar (13th century), which every edition follows.
The metre — kuṟaḷ veṇpā
Each couplet is a kuṟaḷ veṇpā, the shortest form of the veṇpā: seven metrical feet (cīr), four in the first line and three in the second. The form forces extreme compression — the reason the couplets are so quotable, and why they need commentary. Read them aloud: the rhythm is part of the meaning.
Commentators, editions and translations

Ten medieval commentators are remembered; Parimēlaḻakar’s commentary (13th c.) became the standard. The Kural survived on palm leaves until the first printed edition at Madras in 1812. Translations began with Latin (C. J. Beschi, 18th c.) and German (Karl Graul, 1856); G. U. Pope’s English verse (1886), used on every card here, made it known in the West. Today there are translations in more than 40 languages.
The Kural and Vedānta
Though it names no school, the Kural shares the great themes of the Upaniṣads and the Gītā. It opens with the Lord as the first cause (1, as the Gītā’s “of letters I am a”); calls desire the seed of endless births (361); defines virtue as a stainless mind (34); asks us to cling to Him who is free of clinging in order to let go of clinging (350); and calls true knowledge seeing the real substance of everything (355). Its ethics of non-violence, forgiveness and truth are the yamas of Patañjali; its praise of the householder and of effort echo the Gītā’s karma-yoga and the Yoga Vāsiṣṭha’s pauruṣa. The insight on each key couplet notes these parallels.
