ब्रह्मसूत्राणि

All 555 sūtras

The whole text of Bādarāyaṇa’s Brahma Sūtra in Devanāgarī and transliteration, in Śaṅkara’s numbering — search it, filter it by adhyāya, kind or concept, and practise reciting it.

How to use this page

All 555 sūtras in order, each with its adhikaraṇa. The 130 key sūtras (marked) carry a title and meaning, and link to their full study. Filter by adhyāya, pāda, the kind of sūtra, or a concept (the sixteen concept tags of the overview, inherited from each sūtra’s adhikaraṇa); search in English, IAST or Devanāgarī (diacritics optional — sankhya finds Sāṅkhya). Turn on Practise to hide the transliteration and meanings while you recite.

  • Key concept Defines a term or idea the whole tradition uses
  • Philosophy What is real — cause and effect, Brahman, the world
  • Reading the Upaniṣads Shows which being an Upaniṣadic passage really means
  • Debate & refutation States or answers a rival view — Sāṅkhya, Buddhists, Mīmāṃsā…
  • Practice Discipline, meditation and the means to knowledge
  • Death, path & liberation What happens to karma, at death, and in freedom

Sūtra text: the Sanskrit of the Brahma Sūtra on sa.wikisource (वेदान्तदर्शनम्), checked against the text printed with Śaṅkara’s bhāṣya; numbering and the division into 191 adhikaraṇas follow Śaṅkara (as in Swami Gambhirananda’s and Swami Vireswarananda’s translations). Transliteration is generated from the Devanāgarī. Word meanings, translations, explanations and diagrams are written for this page; they follow Śaṅkara’s reading, with the readings of Rāmānuja and Madhva noted where they differ.
