The All — the cosmic formविश्वरूपः57 names
The hymn opens with viśvam, “the universe”. Śaṅkara explains: the world is not something beside the Lord; it is he, as an effect is not other than its cause, as a pot is not other than clay. Names of this group see him as everything — thousand-headed, thousand-eyed, facing every way — the vision Arjuna saw in Gītā chapter 11.
Chanting them trains the eye to see the sacred in whatever is in front of it.
Key names, word by word
The very first name: the whole, which he enters and which is not apart from him.
The all-pervading; Śaṅkara quotes “by his radiance he pervades heaven and earth”.
From the Puruṣa-sūkta: every head is his.

Beyond form, mind and measureनिर्गुणः49 names
Alongside the names of form are names that deny all form: aprameya beyond proof, acintya beyond thought, nirguṇa beyond qualities, even śūnya — empty of every attribute. They point to Brahman as the Upaniṣads describe it.
Śaṅkara takes the hymn’s many forms and the formless as one truth seen at two levels.

Background
The setting — Bhīṣma on the bed of arrows

The war is over. Bhīṣma, the grand-sire of the Kurus, lies on a bed of arrows, waiting for the sun’s northern course before he leaves his body. Yudhiṣṭhira, troubled by the slaughter, comes with Kṛṣṇa and his brothers to learn dharma from him. In the Anuśāsana-parva of the Mahābhārata, after many teachings, he asks six questions — and Bhīṣma answers with the thousand names.
Who is the one God in the world? What is the one highest refuge? By praising whom, and worshipping whom, do people reach the good?
Which dharma do you hold the highest of all dharmas? By repeating what is a living being freed from the bond of birth and saṃsāra?
Bhīṣma: the person who, ever alert, praises the Lord of the world, the God of gods, the infinite, the highest Person, with the thousand names —
— this I hold the highest dharma of all: that one should always worship the lotus-eyed Lord with devotion and with hymns of praise.
| Asked | Question | Bhīṣma’s answer |
|---|---|---|
Who is the one God? | Viṣṇu, the Lord of the world (verses 4–6, 9–11) |
What is the one highest refuge? | He who is the highest light, tapas and Brahman (9) |
By praising whom? | Praising him with the thousand names (4) |
By worshipping whom? | Worshipping the imperishable Person with devotion (5) |
What is the highest dharma? | Worshipping the lotus-eyed one with devotion and praise (8) |
By chanting what is one freed? | The thousand names, which remove sin and fear (12) |

The plan of the hymn
- Pūrva-bhāga (introduction) — the questions and answer above; then the ṛṣi, metre and deity of the hymn (Vyāsa; anuṣṭubh; Viṣṇu), the nyāsa (placing the names on the hands and body) and the dhyāna verses for meditation.
- The stotra — 107 ślokas carrying the 1,000 names, and a 108th verse asking for protection. Beginning viśvam viṣṇur vaṣaṭkāraḥ, ending sarvapraharaṇāyudhaḥ.
- Uttara-bhāga (conclusion) — the fruits of recitation (phalaśruti), Arjuna’s and Kṛṣṇa’s verses, and Śiva’s verse to Pārvatī: one name of Rāma equals the thousand.
The metre is anuṣṭubh: each śloka has four quarters (pāda) of eight syllables. The chant page shows the syllables and their weights.
How the names are counted, and the commentaries
Names run into one another by sandhi, so where one ends and the next begins is a matter of interpretation. Śaṅkara’s commentary — one of the oldest — divides them into exactly a thousand; some names count two words (muktānāṃ paramā gatiḥ), and some words appear more than once with different meanings. This page follows his division and numbering.
Parāśara Bhaṭṭar’s Bhagavad-guṇa-darpaṇa (“mirror of the Lord’s qualities”) reads the same names as qualities and deeds of Viṣṇu, drawing on the Purāṇas and Rāmāyaṇa; it sometimes divides them differently. Śaṅkara reads many of them as pointers to the one Brahman.
Names that repeat — 90 of them
A name used twice is never redundant: Śaṅkara gives each occurrence its own meaning, from its place in the hymn.

The Sahasranāma and Vedānta
The hymn praises a personal Lord with form and qualities — yet its very first names (viśvam, bhūtātmā, sākṣī) and many later ones (nirguṇa, acintya, tat, ekātmā) point beyond form. Śaṅkara’s reading joins devotion and knowledge: chanting the names purifies the mind, and a pure mind recognises the Self that the names describe. Bhīṣma calls it the highest dharma; the Gītā (10.25) calls japa the best of sacrifices.
